How to Hire a Software Company in India (SME Checklist)

SMEs lose money hiring “full-service IT” vendors that sell everything and prove nothing. Use this checklist.

    1. Write the problem in one paragraph

Who users are, what is broken today, what “done” looks like in 90 days.

    2. Decide build vs buy

If a product fits 80%+, buy it. Hospitality example: build vs buy hotel software.

    3. Demand proof that can be checked

Live products, named references with permission, or detailed case studies — not “150+ happy clients” with stock photos.

    4. Insist on written scope

Milestones, out-of-scope list, acceptance criteria. See custom software.

    5. Clarify IP and access

Who owns code, who holds cloud accounts, how handover works.

    6. Plan for after launch

Bugs and small changes are normal. Ask about maintenance.

BitLegacy’s own checklist starts at get a scoped estimate and questions to ask a vendor.

    Frequently asked questions

What should an SME ask before hiring?

Ask for a named team contact, written scope, IP terms, similar work (with permission), and a maintenance plan after launch.

When should SMEs buy SaaS instead of custom?

When an existing product covers most of the workflow. Custom is for unique process or deep integrations.
